Fucking ridiculous review for gran torino
“Mark Harris, columnist for Entertainment Weekly, described it as “fantasy pretending to be social commentary,” and accused it of peddling “the delusion that even the bigot next door has something to teach us all about heroism and self-sacrifice,” adding “no, he doesn’t.”
Your right mark harris. All racists are born evil racists. They have no stories. No pathos. No depth. They are born hitler and they die hitler. Any attempt to empathize, or reason with them is wasted, because they will never become human beings, and will always just be monsters.
Ugh. I hate this shit. Everyone is so god damn cynical. The subtext of that movie, it is never said. (one of the things i love about this movie. it is very subtle at times). Is he was always a good person. He went to war. He had to do horrible horrible things to asian people. He could not cope with those things, so his racism became a defense mechanism. If he just killed a bunch of savage animal people, its easier to deal with. But if he has to accept that they were people, just like him, how the fuck can someone with a good heart except that shit? I read into that shit immediately, you know why? because it was 100 percent human. it had an honesty to it that just could not be ignored. To dismiss it as some fantasy bullshit, is ridiculous. A lot of the worst shit in people comes from pain, or ignorance. They are not just evil little cartoon characters with tophats twirling their mustaches. They are fucking human beings. Who were indoctrinated to believe in ignorant bullshit, or got hurt somewhere down the line.
